This is one diet that may just be good for you. It is a diet that is often cited as beneficial. It is for low in saturated fat and high in monounsaturated fat and dietary fiber.

Remember your geography. The Mediterranean is made of many countries but what this diet has in common with all of them is that most of the people in these regions have a high consumption of fruit and vegetables, bread, wheat and other cereals, olive oil, fish, and red wine.

The foods are fresh and "whole". There is no room in this lifestyle for fast food which is literally the opposite of the Mediterranean diet.

Probably the biggest distinction about this diet is the quantity of olive oil. It is used in almost every meal. There are many health properties in olive oil.

The other distinction of this diet is the consumption of fish.

The third distinction is the amount of fresh vegetables in the diet.

These three important ingredients are almost absent in the standard American diet.
